News: Oakwood Gets The Green Light
Conwy County Borough Council have approved plans to build 83 homes on Sychnant Pass, Conwy.
Beech Developments have waited for over 38 months for the plans to be approved to create new homes and fulfil a portion of the housing target, to meet local demand.
Despite a series of setbacks and delays, due to conditions attached to the planning permission (which was first submitted in August 2015) at Sychnant Pass Road, the plans were approved following agreement on matters by the council’s most recent planning committee on 10th October, 2018.
The 83 homes will be made up of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes, with selected properties available through the Help to Buy-Wales scheme. The development will feature a children’s play area, cycle path, improved roads in and around the scheme, as well as additional open green spaces.
The development has been named by Beech Developments as Oakwood, giving its setting with views to the surrounding wood and parkland, bordering the Snowdonia National Park.
Matthew Gilmartin, director of Beech Developments: “We are thrilled that Oakwood has been passed. We have a long list of over 1,000 people looking for new homes in the Conwy area, and so many ready to put down deposits on houses that aren’t even built here yet.
“Despite the growing pressure for new homes in the county, it is staggering the expense and delay not just for us but for all taxpayers for this near three-year process. There is a real need for good quality, sustainable and well-designed housing in the county and the 83 homes will be a good addition to the supply.”
Mum-of-three Linsey Parry has been waiting for new homes, like the ones to be created at Oakwood, to be brought into the marketplace.
“We have been in the renting cycle for too long now and have been desperate to buy for a long time,” said Linsey. “There are secondhand homes available in the area but the amount of capital and time required to bring them up to today’s standards is just out of reach for a large family. The running costs associated with older properties are also extremely high for a family of five when compared to new sustainable homes.
Linsey added: “When you rent it’s so hard trying to save for a deposit. With Beech homes being available through Help to Buy-Wales where only a 5% deposit is required, it means we are able to move into a home of our own much sooner than we had anticipated. We are delighted with the news and hopefully it won’t be long until we can finally get our deposit down on a new home of our choice!”
Work on Oakwood, at Sychnant Pass is set to start this month, carried out by a local workforce and several Conwy-based contractors.
Matthew added: “For the local economy this is great news. We can start to employ tradesmen again and give work to local businesses we have supported for over 24 years in development in North Wales."
